The story
The hero is summoned to a kingdom, where he encounters a monster—only to discover it is his old friend, now cursed.
The philosophy
The friend-turned-monster belongs to one of folklore’s most persistent problems: when the beloved has been transformed beyond recognition, at what point does he stop being the one you loved?
Marie de France’s werewolf Bisclavret is still the loyal courtier beneath the fur, and the tale insists that the person survives the transformation — yet the werewolf traditions of Europe simultaneously accept that some changes cannot be walked back, that the community’s safety and the friend’s identity can no longer be served by the same body. Killing the friend-monster is therefore a doubled act: the hero receives the glory and discovers it worthless, because honor lives in the community’s memory while guilt lives in his. Irreversible acts cannot be redeemed by their outcomes, only carried, and that being forgotten by everyone is sometimes the price of never being able to forget yourself.
