The story

A weary one abandons the battles, returning home and choosing to ground himself in the community he once left behind, vowing to stay and mend the bridges he burned. But upon his return he finds his community has built new bridges he finds difficult to cross.

The philosophy

Evolution wired humans to scan for danger and seek the safety of the tribe. For most of our history, exclusion meant death, so the price of belonging became the surrender of individual desire to the collective will. Communities solve this problem by building shared meanings — rituals, myths, and rules that hold the group together, however strange they may look from the outside.

The pressure to conform is the tax paid for this protection. It demands every person trade their private interior for public harmony. However, individuals who are sure of their destiny can step outside of these boundaries, because today we know that we don’t live in caves anymore, are not hunted by lions, and can form our own virtual tribes.
