Lyrics to “Lover Costing Average”

(Listen to the song here)

I woke up and met a man of law
Called my dealer: "Get off the floor!"
The man turned out to be just a boy
"Sell all my shares, time to enjoy."
Later that night in Caribbean:
"Silverware?” “Oh, It's European!”
"Pop star parade!" & "Nothing to wear!"
The boy seemed to have had his share.
Lucky boy, I'll make you a star
But first I'm off to a country far
Where I'll have another lucky boy waiting by
You know you have to diversify:
investing pays off when you take your time
and place your eggs in different piles
That’s Lover Costing Average for you
Then I met another, a woman of law
That relationship did not go far
"Terms and conditions? The details!"
“It's me, I'm the problem”

Made it through the wilderness
"You think the boy's okay?"
I can give you proper credit
don’t just walk away
Lipstick’s cherry all over the lens
as we're falling into the blue
Lucky lady, I'll make you a star
But first I'm off in another car
To where I'll have another lucky lady waiting by
Gonna have to diversify
pull it off when you take your time
when you put your eggs in different piles
That’s Lover Costing Average for you

We're walking through the landscape
We woke up in the ruins
Collected things the creatures left behind
Went round the castle hill
made green on window sills
The ancient children of the night

Lucky boy, I'll make you a star
But first I'm off to a country far
Where I'll have another lucky boy waiting by
You know you have to diversify:
Silence is golden so you take your time
and place your eggs in different piles
That’s Lover Costing Average for you

Lucky lady, I'll make you a star
But first I'm off in another car
To where I'll have another lucky lady waiting by
Gonna have to diversify
Silence is golden so you take your time
when you put your eggs in different piles
That’s Lover Costing Average for you.

About

Lover Costing Average” is a playful take on Dollar Cost Averaging, which is a term used in stock investments. When you invest this way, you buy the same amount of a stock every month. When the stock price is high, you get fewer shares, and when it’s low, you get more shares. This method helps manage risk: regardless of whatever happens in the market, you consistently make the same purchase each month, because you have other things to do than try to time the market, which is pointless because no one knows the right moments, except perhaps some professionals.

In “Lover Costing Average,” there’s a similar idea. The song tells of a successful man who meets various persons and has relationships with them while hoping that dating multiple people simultaneously is just sensible to see which one will work out.

Just for clarity’s sake: I’m not advocating such a lifestyle. This is just a story about a playboy-type character oriented towards maximizing their benefit and value in stock markets, relationships, and probably elsewhere, too. This song is an examination of this theme and character.

And, there’s also a deeper meaning: is this way of living just a compulsive pursuit of significance in the face of life’s brevity?
